NYC Heart and Hustle

A few weeks back, I published an article about the “Heart and Hustle of New York City.” It’s my love letter to the city that has given me and so many so much over the years. There is no other place I would want to run my business.

I received some great feedback and some great stories of inspiration from members of the community: the people in our city that are “making the doughnuts” like only New Yorkers can do under these incredible circumstances. …

In moments of hardship, I’ve always believed the superpower of live theatre serves as a powerful pill for healing. Theatre brings context and understanding in moments we can’t fully comprehend and unites people in our collective humanity.

But in this particular moment of hardship, the superpower of live theatre has met a force I never anticipated facing. It’s name is “social distancing.” It’s as if our superpower has met its kryptonite. And that is a scary proposition.

But I’ve been in this business for almost twenty years and I refuse to believe the superpower of live theatre is defined by…

To our government officials:

On behalf of all small business owners impacted by the COVID-19 virus, we need your help…and not just your money.

I’ve spent a lot of time with business owners on the front lines dealing with the impact of this virus. Everyone I’ve spoken to, regardless of their specific perspective, sees the pain and loss to families and loved ones in our communities. We also know there is so much pain we don’t see — the pain that is being inflicted on the most vulnerable. We understand that it is our responsibility to do our part to…

I know I’m not alone in my passion for connecting kids to arts and cultural experiences who may not otherwise have access. It’s personal to me because it’s something I wish someone had done for me as a kid — and now I’m actually in a position to make an impact by creating those opportunities for others. It’s the mission of Situation Project — our 501(c)(3) organization that connects underserved NYC public school students with the amazing arts and cultural experiences their city offers.

If you work in the business of theatre, arts and culture, there is so much to be proud of. We facilitate experiences and stories that bring people together and make the world a better place. I believe this, and it’s what makes working in this business so satisfying. On one hand, I’d like that to be enough in terms of a legacy. It would be an easier path. But the thing that keeps me up at night is that in a few short weeks another year will be in the books where over 2 million seats have gone empty in…

Today the Clio Awards officially announced the shortlist of their first annual “Live Entertainment” category. There was so much amazing work on display from so many amazing agencies. I’m glowing with pride today to see my team shortlisted in 7 categories — such a cool moment for our clients and our agency.

As anyone in the business of “live” will tell you, marketing live entertainment is a high wire act that often feels as though there is no net below you. Imagine this brief…we want you to market something that requires people to get off their couch and into a…

TEDxBroadway 2019 is officially a wrap. This year we welcomed our biggest crowd yet, and it was also one of the warmest I’ve ever stood in front of. Thank you to everyone who came out and contributed to the conversation around “what is the best Broadway can be?”

This is our 8th year running this event, and there was no shortage of passion or ideas brought to the stage by our fabulous and fearless speaker line-up.

TEDxBroadway returns to New World Stages.

For the last eight years, I’ve had the great honor of co-organizing TEDxBroadway with a long-time friend, Jim McCarthy. It has been a total labor of love and entrenches me in a world of curating an event that has one core focus, what’s the best Broadway can be?

Working alongside Jim (CEO of Goldstar), who is a master at uncovering interesting stories and challenging speakers to aim for the rafters, we receive hundreds of speaker suggestions every year. …

As I sat at this year’s Tony Awards®, I admired the bold spirit of entrepreneurship, creativity, and guts that fill one big room on one big night. Every year some win and some inevitably lose, but everyone in that room is worthy of a prize even if only a select few end up leaving with a trophy. I stand in awe of every single one of them.

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure to sit on the front lines and watch the creation of some of the most memorable productions that have gone on to create a profound impact…

It’s commencement season. Can you remember your graduating self? Can you remember those questions, insecurities, and aspirations that lingered in your brain when you received your college degree? I know I do. Earlier this month, I had the honor to deliver the commencement speech at my alma mater (the University at Albany Business School) and was brought back to that time. I prepared by thinking about what feedback I would give my 22-year-old self today in that pivotal moment.

Situation turned 18 years old just a few weeks ago, and I reflected on all the transitional moments I’ve been a…
