Today, someone dropped this statement on me — “do you know what I would do if I were you?”
Is it just me or does anyone else out there hate when you receive advice that starts with this sentence?
We are all irrational, flawed and frustrated in some way. We all know this and are always struggling to improve upon our current self. “If I were you…” assumes we are rational beings which none of us truly are. For example, I know eating a box of Teddy Grahams before I go to bed doesn’t check my personal wellness box — but I dare you to step in front of my cupboard around 8pm to try and stop me. I double dare you. How’s that for rational?
All of us need guidance in our lives in some way shape or form. We need the help and feedback of those we respect the most and the strength to be able to steer clear of the sources of bad guidance that are around every corner.
I’m fortunate enough to have accumulated a great group of friends and mentors in my life who I turn to regularly for support. And when I really sit back and think about it, my most trusted advisors rarely actually ever say what they would do if they were me. Instead, they spend time listening rather than talking and ask questions to help me find the answer for my irrational self.
So, with that said, here’s what I would do if I were you… I would run fast and furious from people who say “if I were you.”
